We Are More Than Just Another Small Digital Marketing Agency
There is a strange little misconception about running a small digital marketing agency. From the outside, it can look like a world of clever campaigns, perfectly designed graphics, impressive reports and people who somehow always know exactly what Google is doing.
The reality is slightly different.
Most days at MJL Digital involve a lot of browser tabs, a lot of problem-solving, a lot of coffee, and at least one moment where we stare at something on a screen and say, “Why is it doing that?”
But somewhere between fixing websites, writing blogs, reviewing analytics and explaining why SEO is not an overnight magic trick, there is something we value far more than the work itself: the relationships we build with the people behind the businesses.
When we started MJL Digital, we knew we wanted to build a small digital marketing agency that worked differently. We did not want to become another agency where clients felt like another account number in a spreadsheet, passed between departments and only hearing from someone when a report was due.
We wanted to work with businesses where we knew the owners, understood their goals, celebrated their wins and genuinely cared about what happened next.
For those who do not know the story behind MJL Digital, we are a husband-and-wife team who built the agency around a simple idea: digital marketing should feel human. You can read more about who we are, what we do and why we started MJL Digital here: About MJL Digital
For us, marketing has always been about people first.
Why Referrals Will Always Mean More To Us
That is why our favourite clients will always be the ones who come through referrals.
There is something incredibly special about someone trusting you enough to recommend you to another business owner. A referral usually comes with a story attached. It comes from someone saying, “These people helped us, I think they can help you too.”
Those relationships mean a lot because they are built on trust before we have even opened a Google Analytics report or written a single line of content.
We have found that the best client relationships are not built from a sales pitch. They are built from conversations, honesty, understanding the challenges businesses face, and being invested in the journey beyond just delivering a service.
That personal approach is one of the things we believe makes working with a small digital marketing agency different.
You know who you are speaking to, your ideas do not disappear into a chain of departments, and the people working on your business actually understand what you are trying to achieve.
Small Agency, Big Opportunities
At the same time, one of the things we love about MJL Digital is the variety of businesses we get to work with.
On one side, we have smaller businesses where we are working closely with the owner, helping them understand their online presence, finding opportunities, creating content strategies and being that extra pair of eyes they might not have internally.
On the other side, we work with larger global businesses, supporting their digital processes, managing content and helping them navigate the ever-changing online landscape across different markets.
Being a small digital marketing agency does not mean thinking small.
The contrast is something we genuinely enjoy. One day we might be discussing a local business owner’s first steps into SEO, and the next we are looking at international websites, ecommerce data and digital strategies that reach customers across the world.
Both matter.
Both are exciting.
And both remind us why we love what we do.
The Part Of Agency Life You Do Not See Online
Of course, running a digital agency is not all strategy meetings and clever ideas. There is also the very important part of switching off at the end of the day.
Most evenings, after the last email has been answered and the final task has been ticked off, we pour ourselves a drink, put on an episode of @beardmeatsfood and attempt to convince ourselves that we are finished working for the day.
Most of the time, we are not.
There is usually a reel being edited for a client, a last-minute idea written down, or “just one more thing” that needs to be adjusted before we call it a night.
But that is part of the fun.
MJL Digital is not something we simply clock out from at 5pm. It is something we have built around our lives, our interests and our belief that marketing should feel human.
The Biggest Marketing Lesson We Have Learnt
Because behind every website, every campaign and every piece of content is a person trying to grow something they care about.
And that is the part of marketing that often gets forgotten.
The biggest lesson we have learnt is that people do not connect with businesses because they have the biggest budget or the most polished advertising. They connect with businesses they trust, businesses that understand them and businesses that show up consistently.
This applies not only to the relationship between a brand and its customers, but also to the relationship between an agency and its clients.
Building trust takes clear communication, understanding a client’s goals and consistently showing that you are invested in their success. As highlighted by Whatagraph – Building Trust With Clients, strong client relationships are built through communication, demonstrating value and having a genuine understanding of client needs.
Why Human Connection Still Matters In Marketing
In a world where businesses can access more marketing tools than ever before, genuine connection has become one of the biggest differentiators.
The tools, platforms and strategies will continue to change, but the importance of trust between businesses, customers and marketing partners will remain.
A small digital marketing agency is not defined by the size of its team, but by the level of care, strategy and commitment it brings to every client relationship.
So yes, we will continue writing blogs, fixing websites, analysing data and celebrating when a page moves from position 11 to position 9 on Google.
But we will also continue building relationships, answering messages, celebrating client wins and occasionally editing reels while watching someone eat an impressive amount of food on YouTube.
Because that is MJL Digital.
A little bit of strategy, a little bit of chaos, and a whole lot of caring about the businesses we get to work with.
